Saturday Shot: 10 Nov

Today’s photo shoot is from my garden – again. There’s been a lot of colour this fall: the best show of fall colours since we moved here in 2014.
I was looking at the two pictures I chose for today, and couldn’t for the life of me figure out what the pink flowers were. The macro lens view tends to make things look quite different than they do with the naked eye. I did a quick check in the garden (in the dark, with a flashlight) and discovered that it’s a yarrow (Achillea millefolium)! And it’s still flowering this late in the season. Up close it looks like a hydrangea, which is kind of interesting.
The second photo is a barberry leaf (Berberis). I love the deep red colour, and the bokeh of lit up water droplets in the background. Barberries are a beautiful burgundy in summer, and switch to this rich red in fall. We were lucky that my mother-in-law potted up a bunch of barberry plants from her garden and gave them to us for our garden. We also have a green barberry that prefers more shade – I just planted them this fall so we’ll see how they do next year.
I feel like I’m cheating by being able to step out my front door and into a plant photography wonderland. Next week I’ll post something from outside my property. Would probably be a good idea to get out…
